Chapter One: Introduction
1.1 Background of the Study
Disaster management in Girei Local Government Area (LGA), Adamawa State, has been greatly shaped by geopolitical factors, including local governance structures, regional cooperation, and national policies. Geopolitical influences determine how resources are allocated for disaster preparedness, response, and recovery, which in turn affects the resilience of communities in the face of disasters such as floods, droughts, and communal conflicts (Mohammed & Yusuf, 2023).
Girei, located in the northeastern part of Nigeria, has witnessed its share of natural disasters, exacerbated by political challenges and inadequate infrastructure. The role of local governance and regional collaboration is pivotal in addressing these challenges. This study seeks to explore how geopolitical factors, such as local government leadership, inter-state cooperation, and resource allocation, shape disaster management in Girei (Aliyu & Ahmed, 2024). By understanding these factors, the study aims to propose more effective strategies for managing disasters in the region.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Despite the increasing frequency of disasters in Girei LGA, disaster management has been hampered by inadequate political coordination, insufficient resources, and poor implementation of national policies at the local level. This study will investigate the geopolitical factors that influence disaster management in Girei and identify areas where improvements are needed.

1.4 Research Questions
1.5 Research Hypothesis
1.6 Significance of the Study
This study is significant because it highlights the critical role of geopolitical factors in shaping disaster management strategies in Girei LGA. The findings will inform local governments, policymakers, and disaster response agencies on how to improve disaster preparedness and response mechanisms in the region. The research will also contribute to the broader discourse on disaster management in Nigeria.
1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study focuses on Girei LGA in Adamawa State, with a particular emphasis on the geopolitical factors that influence disaster management. The limitations include challenges in obtaining detailed data from disaster response agencies and local stakeholders due to security and political concerns.
